Fellows Program Enhances Classroom Experience

Undergraduate and graduate students participating as teaching fellows in the National Science Foundation's GK-12 program improved their communication skills and instructional skills, according to a recent evaluation conducted by WCER's Paula White and Norman Webb and the American Institutes for Research.

The fellows' cooperating teachers benefited from increased professional development opportunities and said they gained subject matter knowledge in science and mathematics. Classroom students' learning was enriched, and participating school districts strengthened their partnerships with nearby higher education institutions.

The National Science Foundation's (NSF) GK-12 Fellowship program connects K-12 teachers with graduate students and advanced undergraduate students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs. The fellows serve as creative classroom collaborators for teachers and share their special subject-matter knowledge.
