Helping Teachers Scaffold Instruction

February 18, 2008

Educators in many districts are challenged to adapt instruction for students who are English Language Learners (ELLs). Teachers seek professional development in how to best scaffold instruction for these students and to close the language and academic achievement gaps between ELLs and their peers. WIDA’s professional development coordinator Mariana Castro is the lead trainer and program developer for a course called CLIMBS™ (Content and Language Integration as a Means of Bridging Success), designed to help K-12 educators scaffold instruction for their ELLs. The course uses a scientifically-based approach to sheltered instruction as a means of incorporating the WIDA English Language Proficiency (ELP) Standards into academic content and language instruction.
